Get Online Week 2014

This year, the eighth national Get Online Week takes place between 13th and 19th October. The annual digital inclusion campaign run by Tinder Foundation is aiming to engage 50,000 people from all across the UK, inspiring them to get online and do more with digital skills.

We want to encourage everyone in the community to come along to the Hilltop Centre to start something new online.  Whether you are new to computers or tablets and want to learn from scratch or already know a little and want to know more, our team of volunteers will be on hand to help you get started.

We are also running a one day Community Health event on 16th October, when we are offering everyone over the age of 40 a FREE health check with our NHS Community Health Nurse from Doncaster West Development Trust.  Checks will include Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Diabetes, Heart Health and Smoking Cessation Advice. See you there! No Appointment Necessary.

You could also take part in our Community Health survey about how you use the internet to search for health information and be in with a chance of winning £50.00. We are also asking people to take our short course “Healthy Online” which will help you to navigate and use NHS Choices to find safe, reliable and accurate information on health and health services.

South Yorkshire Hot Spots Centre

The South Yorkshire Hot Spots project is an award winning partnership involving the South Yorkshire NHS departments, South Yorkshire Local Authorities, the Department of Work and Pensions and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Hot Spots South Yorkshire

The Edlington Hilltop Centre is a registered Hot Spots Centre and all of our volunteers and staff are fully trained to make a referral for anyone living in the community.  A single referral can provide access to:

  • A Home Safety Check which may include the supply and installation of free smoke alarms.
  • A Benefits Entitlement Check for vulnerable residents unable to refer themselves directly.
  • NHS Stop Smoking Service for advice and support to quit smoking and improve your health.
  • An Energy Saving Check Up for advice on keeping your home warmer and saving you energy, plus information on grants for energy saving improvements such as insulation.
  • A referral for information on Community Care Alarms, which gives 24 hour support to help vulnerable people live independently.

Why not come along to the Hilltop Centre and speak to us to arrange a referral for yourself or somebody you know, who would benefit from these valuable services.  Referrals are acted upon with 48 hours.

Get online week has been going since 2007, when UK online centres first marked out a date in October to bring digital inclusion to national attention. Since then the campaign has grown into a week-long annual celebration, with thousands of events taking place each year in centres and more unusual locations, bringing digital skills and know-how to everyone.

The Edlington Hilltop Centre will be taking part this year, so keep a look out for more information and updates in the comings weeks.
